Lines On Mama's Back

Poem Theme:

It tells a story from the lenses of a child about gender based violence. This poem tells the tales of domestic violence that women suffer everyday in their homes. Telling it from the pov of a child juxtapose the innocence of a child to the harsh realities of life.

Poem Inspiration:

I was inspired by the tales of the everyday Nigerian woman, who suffers domestic violence in her home, by the one person who's supposed to be a protector. Women in different sphere of life are not excluded from this suffering. It's a sad and harsh reality of the Nigerian society

How long have they been writing poems:

I've been writing for about 15 years now. Started writing poems back in junior secondary school

How they discovered their passion for poetry and word art:

I started writing back in junior secondary school, specifically in JSS 1, as a rape survivor I couldn't tell people my feelings so I wrote them. Writing helped me convey words I couldn't say. I remember when I was raped, I told my parents about the incident through letter writing. Now as an adult who have suffered depression & anxiety for the most of her life, I continue to write because that's the only language I know, that what makes me feel alive and that's how I express myself in ways my mouth can't say.
