The Change We Seek

This poem was born from an experience my mother and I had.

We boarded a Keke and clearly told the driver our destination. He agreed to take us there for the usual price. But on the way, he suddenly stopped and asked us to get down because he had somewhere else to go.

We had loads with us, time was against us, and getting another Keke from that point would have been difficult. So we tried to reason with him. Instead, he became aggressive, speaking his language, and eventually drove us to a park far beyond our destination.

When we confronted him, he refused to take responsibility.

We explained what happened to the men at the park, hoping they would help us. But instead of addressing the wrong, they blamed us for speaking up. Not because we were wrong, but because they were afraid of the tension and conflict often associated with the driver's tribe.

That experience made me realize something:

Sometimes, the problem is not only the person who does wrong, but also those who see the wrong and remain silent because they are afraid of conflict.

We keep asking for change in our society, our leaders, and our communities. But change cannot begin only from the people at the top.

It must begin with us—with the courage to speak up, the humility to accept when we are wrong, and the strength to stand for what is right, regardless of tribe, fear, or pressure.

Because the change we seek outside must first begin within.

What got me into poetry was my desire to express the things I couldn't always say in ordinary conversations.

I discovered that poetry gave me a way to turn experiences, emotions, questions, and observations into words that could make people pause and think.

For me, poetry is more than rhyming words. It is a voice—a way to tell stories, challenge perspectives, and speak about issues that matter.

Sometimes, one experience can leave you with a question. And sometimes, that question becomes a poem.

That is what poetry became for me: a way to turn experiences into messages and words into impact.
