About Maryam Abbas's work:
Poem Title:
We built the table
Poem Theme:
It is centered on inclusion, representation, and the courage to create spaces where everyone has a voice. It explores what happens when people who have been excluded from decision making stop waiting for an invitation and begin building their own table one rooted in justice, empathy, dialogue, and collective responsibility.
Poem Inspiration:
I was inspired by the many people whose voices are often left outside the rooms where decisions about their lives are made young people, women, children, people living with disabilities, the vulnerable, and ordinary citizens whose experiences are rarely represented. The image of “the table” came to me as a metaphor for power, access and belonging. I wanted to ask what happens when we stop begging for a seat and start creating a space where everyone can belong?
How long have they been writing poems:
I have been writing poetry for over 10 years now, beginning with simple expressions of emotions and experiences and gradually growing into spoken word and socially conscious poetry. Over the years, poetry has become more than writing for me it has become a way of processing the world, telling stories, challenging conversations and giving voice to things that are often left unsaid
How they discovered their passion for poetry and word art:
I discovered my passion for poetry through my fascination with words and the power they have to make people feel, think and see things differently. What began as an interest in expressing my thoughts gradually became a deeper love for spoken word and word art. I realized that I wasn’t simply interested in writing beautiful lines… I wanted my words to carry meaning, provoke conversations and connect with people. Performing and sharing my work eventually showed me that poetry could be both art and advocacy, and that was when I knew I had found my voice.
