Merry-Go-Round explores the feeling of being stuck in life's endless cycles — making efforts, holding on to hope, and repeatedly trying again, only to find yourself back where you started. Through the metaphor of a merry-go-round, the poem captures the frustration of constant movement without meaningful progress, reflecting on the emotional weight of unfulfilled expectations and recurring disappointments.
Poem Inspiration:
The inspiration behind Merry-Go-Round came from a personal experience I had a few years ago, shortly after graduating from secondary school. At the time, life wasn't going as I had hoped, and I often felt as though I wasn't making any meaningful progress, despite my efforts.
Although things aren't entirely where I'd like them to be today, I've learnt to keep trying, take things one step at a time, and hold on to hope.
I chose the image of a merry-go-round to capture that familiar feeling of constantly trying, moving and hoping for change, only to feel as though you're back where you started. Having experienced this feeling myself, I wanted to express it through poetry, knowing that there are others who might see a part of their own experiences in it.
How long have they been writing poems:
I began writing poems a few months ago. Although I've always had a love for creative writing, I previously considered poetry a rather difficult form of expression. It wasn't until a few months ago that I developed a genuine interest in it and began exploring the art of expressing thoughts, emotions and experiences through poetry.
How they discovered their passion for poetry and word art:
I discovered my passion for poetry after coming across a poetry contest on Instagram. It was my first attempt at writing poetry, and, fortunately, my entry made it into the top 45, with the poems of all selected participants published for readers to enjoy.
That experience sparked my interest in poetry. I found myself enjoying not only the process of writing but also reading the works of other poets and discovering the different ways people express thoughts, emotions and experiences through words.
Since then, I've written several poems and have been fortunate to have some published by literary magazines. I also enjoy reading other poets' works because I see it as an opportunity to learn, discover new perspectives and continue growing as a writer.
